I met this guy while I was walking around
Beebe Lake. He says they're deploying people on bikes to capture images of trails where you can't take cars, but it's small-scale and experimental at this stage. A pedestrian version is also in development, and may come into use next year. He's excited about this, because he'd like to capture images of the Appalachian trail.
The readout on the handlebars shows the regions covered so far, and the amount of disk space available. He had the image capture turned off when I met him, so I won't be in them. He says they'll probably be available through the Google Maps interface in two to three months.
Taken from my 3.5 year-old cell phone. Sorry the image isn't very good.

Very Cool!
Did he happen to mention how he landed such an amazing job?
